i. What is it?

The Fiscal Code is an alphanumerical code issued by the Italian Revenues Authority in order to identify the citizen (either Italian or foreign) for legal and fiscal purposes. Fiscal codes are determined according to the requester’s personal data.

ii. Why do I need it?

Whomever wants to conclude any legal instrument or document (inheritance, contracts, mortgages, sponsorships, real estate rental etc.) or fulfill an administrative and fiscal obligation needs to be identified through a Fiscal Code.

iii. How to submit the request - forms and instructions

Italian and foreign citizens can request a Fiscal Code from the Italian Revenues Authority through the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco (if residing in this Consular district).

1. Download the application form for the fiscal code - click here.
2. Fill out the form per the instructions provided by the Agenzia delle Entrate - click here
3. Download and fill out the CONTACT FORM - click here

PLEASE NOTE. Forms must be filled out entirely, in block print/writing, with:

    • physical residential address in the U.S.A. - (P.O. boxes CANNOT be accepted)
    • telephone number
    • personal email address
    • date and signature
    • reason for the request 

4. Mail the following items a, b, c, d to Consulate General of Italy, 2590 Webster Street, San Francisco, CA 94115:

    1. The completed and signed application form for the fiscal code;
    2. The completed CONTACT FORM;
    3. A pre-stamped, self-addressed "letter format" envelope (please do not send big priority/express mail envelopes); we will use it to mail to you the Codice Fiscale plastic card, once the Italian Revenue Authority has sent it to us;
    4. photocopy of your passport;
    5. if your passport does NOT show your maiden name, you must also include a photocopy of your birth certificate or marriage certificate

PLEASE NOTE - Incomplete, inaccurate, or unclear forms will NOT be accepted.

iv. How long does it take to issue?

On average, the Consulate will e-email you the new code within 10 working days from receipt of the complete documentation. The Consulate will forward the Fiscal Code Card through mail on average within 3 months from the request*, using the stamped, self-addressed envelope provided by the applicant.

*This amount of time can vary significantly, depending on when the Italian Revenues Authority sends us the Card.

 

v. In case of lost or damaged fiscal code cards

Please request a duplicate following the same procedures indicated above.
