If an Italian citizen finds herself/himself in an emergency situation, in the event of theft or loss of her/his passport, this Consulate General can issue an emergency travel document, also known as E.T.D. (Emergency Travel Document), valid ONLY for travel back to Italy or to the country of legal residence.
NOTICE: once they have reached their destination, E.T.D. holders are required to return the document to the border police or another police station, regardless of its remaining validity. If the beneficiary of an EU E.T.D. issued by a consular office travels to a country other than Italy, the beneficiary is required to return the document to the consular office with territorial jurisdiction for the destination.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- The E.T.D. is valid for a single return trip to Italy or to the country of current residence.
- NOTICE: if you reside in another consular jurisdiction, your residence will be verified by the Consulate General through a check of the AIRE registry. The address declared on the form must correspond to the one in the Consular Registry of the consular district of residence.
- The E.T.D. application must be submitted to the Consulate/Embassy abroad from whose jurisdiction the return flight to Italy/country of residence departs. Click here to check the territories that belong to the district of the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco.
- Since the document is valid for only a few days, the E.T.D. must be requested no later than 7 days before the departure of the return flight.
- Canada does not recognize the E.T.D. as a valid travel document. Applicants must therefore ensure that they book a direct flight to Italy or a flight that does not stop at airports located in Canada.
