By Presidential Decrees of 31/03/2025, published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic of 31/03/2025, the date of the abrogative referendums pursuant to Article 75 of the Constitution has been set at 8 and 9 June 2025.
Please note that VOTING is a RIGHT protected by the Italian Constitution and that, under Law 459 of 27 December 2001, Italian citizens residing abroad, registered on the electoral roll, may VOTE BY MAIL, receiving the ballot envelope at their address of residence. To this end, it is recommended that you check and regularise your registry and address details at the competent consular office, preferably using the online portal of consular services Fast It.
As an alternative to voting by mail, voters registered with AIRE may CHOOSE TO VOTE IN ITALY IN THE ELECTORAL REGISTRATION MUNICIPALITY, communicating their choice (“OPZIONE“) in writing to the Consulate General no later than the 10th day after the calling of the elections. Voters who choose to vote in Italy on the occasion of the next referendum will receive from their respective Italian municipalities the postcard-notice to vote at polling stations in Italy. The choice (“opzione“) to vote in Italy is valid only for the referendum with respect to which it is expressed.
It is reiterated that in any case the option MUST BE RECEIVED at the Consular Office NO LATER THAN TEN DAYS AFTER THE VOTING INITIATION, i.e. NO LATER THAN 10/04/2025. This notice may be written on plain paper and – in order to be valid – must contain the voter’s name, surname, date and place of birth, place of residence and signature, accompanied by a copy of an identity document of the declarant.
For this communication, you may also use the special form that can be downloaded here.
For further updated information regarding the referendum, please follow the dedicated page on the website of this Consulate General.
The form, duly completed, signed and accompanied by an identity document, may be delivered/sent:
- by hand: 2590 Webster St., San Francisco, CA 94115; lunedì-venerdì dalle 09.00 alle 12:00
- by ordinary e-mail: sanfrancisco.voto@esteri.it
- by certified e-mail (“Posta Elettronica Certificata – PEC“): con.sanfrancisco@cert.esteri.it
As required by the regulations in force, it will be the voters’ responsibility to verify that the notice of option sent by post has been received in due time by their Consular Office. Requests received after the deadline indicated above CANNOT be considered valid.
The choice to vote in Italy can be subsequently REVOKED with a written communication to be sent or delivered to the Consular Office in the same way and by the same date as for exercising the option.
If one chooses to return to Italy to vote, the law does NOT provide for any kind of reimbursement for travel expenses incurred, but only for reduced rates within Italian territory.
