The Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco paid a visit to the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, one of the world’s leading research centers in particle physics, photon science, materials research, and accelerator technologies, to gain first-hand insight into the groundbreaking scientific research taking place at the laboratory and the important contribution of the Italian scientific community.15

Consul General Massimo Carnelos, accompanied by Deputy Consul General Davide Corriero and INNOVIT Managing Director Alberto Acito, was welcomed by Professor Alberto Salleo for an in-depth visit to SLAC’s state-of-the-art research facilities, where scientists from around the world collaborate on some of today’s most advanced scientific and technological challenges.

The visit also provided the opportunity to meet Distinguished Professor of Physics Claudio Pellegrini, internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to the development of X-ray free-electron laser technology and for the decisive role he played in the creation of SLAC’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), one of the world’s most advanced scientific instruments.

Throughout the visit, particular attention was devoted to the outstanding contribution of Italian researchers, engineers, and scientists working at SLAC, whose expertise continues to play a vital role in advancing frontier research across multiple scientific disciplines.

The Consulate General extends its sincere appreciation to Alberto Salleo, Claudio Pellegrini, Claudio Emma, Giulia Lanza, Benjamin Ripman, Riccardo Melchiorri, and the many Italian researchers who welcomed the delegation and shared their work and experience.

Visits such as this reaffirm the importance of scientific diplomacy in strengthening the longstanding partnership between Italy and the United States, while promoting collaboration in research, innovation, advanced technologies, and higher education.
