Repatriation of Deceased Persons

The loss of a loved one is always a time of deep sorrow. When it occurs abroad, it also entails the need to address several practical matters.

To repatriate the body, contact must first be made with an Italian Diplomatic or Consular Office. The Consulate will then request the necessary authorization (“nulla osta”) from the competent Municipality in Italy. Once this authorization is obtained, the funeral agency appointed by the family – at their own expense – can proceed with the repatriation.

It is possible to apply to regional or local authorities in Italy for potential reimbursements or financial assistance.
