Please be advised that, as of August 3, 2026, all Italian paper identity cards (CIC) will cease to be valid.
We therefore strongly encourage Italian citizens who still only have a paper identity card (expired or about to expire) to apply in advance for an electronic identity card (CIE), by booking an appointment as soon as possible in order to avoid inconveniences and congestion of appointments close to the mentioned expiry date.
Appointments for the issuance of CIEs to Italian citizens registered with the AIRE of this Consulate General and in possession of only an expired or expiring CIC must be booked through the Prenot@mi portal, or – if no appointments are available on the portal – by email to sanfrancisco.cie@esteri.it. In the email, it is essential to specify in the subject line “LAST NAME FIRST NAME – EXPIRED OR EXPIRING PAPER IDENTITY CARD” and attach a copy of the same paper identity card. The Office will not respond to emails that do not comply with the above requirements or that are received without attachments. The Office will then arrange an appointment with the user.
