Pursuant to Decree-Law No. 408 of June 24, 1994, only Italian citizens residing in an EU member state registered with AIRE, or voters temporarily domiciled in an EU member country for study or work reasons, may vote abroad for the representatives to the European Parliament to be elected in Italy. More information can be found on the Italian Ministry of the Interior website (click HERE).
Italian citizens residing in the United States of America will be able to vote for the representatives to the European Parliament to be elected in Italy exclusively in their municipality of electoral registration in Italy, as provided for all Italian citizens residing in a non-EU member country.
To this end, as indicated in Law No. 18 of January 24, 1979, Italian citizens residing in non-EU member countries will receive from their Italian municipality of electoral registration a postcard-notice bearing an indication of the date of the vote, a warning that the recipient may pick up the electoral certificate at the competent municipal office, and that the exhibition of the postcard itself entitles the holder to take advantage of travel facilities to go to the municipality of electoral registration to vote. In order to vote at the polling station, it is not mandatory to present the postcard-notice received.
Travel facilitations in favor of voters who will travel to their municipality of electoral registration to vote are available here dait.interno.gov.it/documenti/circ-dait-049-servelet-16-05-2024.pdf.
To vote, AIRE enrollees must report to the polling station in the AIRE municipality of last residence with their voter card and a valid ID.
Those who are temporarily in the United States and are not AIRE members will only be able to vote by showing up at their Italian municipality of residence with their voter card and a valid ID.
In case of non-receipt of the postcard-notice within the time period prescribed by law and any requests for issuance, replacement or renewal of the voter card, you should contact your municipality of AIRE registration.
