During the last week of September, the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco and INNOVIT – Italian Innovation and Culture Hub welcomed a delegation from the Region of Tuscany for the fourth consecutive year.

Known worldwide for its extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage, renowned cuisine, and exceptional wines, Tuscany is also a dynamic region with a strong commitment to innovation. It boasts leading expertise in biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and a wide range of other high-tech sectors.

This vibrant ecosystem is supported by the region’s universities and research centers. Leading academic institutions, including the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa and the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, play a key role in fostering technology transfer and translating scientific research into patents, new businesses, and innovative startups.

Tuscany stands out in particular for its strengths in the life sciences and MedTech sectors.

As part of the visit, Consul General of Italy in San Francisco Massimo Carnelos accompanied members of the Tuscan delegation to the headquarters of Genentech. Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1976, Genentech was one of the pioneers of the global biotechnology industry. The visit provided an important opportunity for the delegation to engage with one of the Bay Area’s most influential biotechnology companies, operating within one of the world’s most dynamic biotech ecosystems, home to hundreds of specialized companies.

The Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco is also pleased to announce that the Region of Tuscany has renewed its partnership with the Consulate and INNOVIT for an additional four years, formalizing its commitment through a new agreement.

The renewed partnership will further strengthen ties between Tuscany and the Bay Area, creating new opportunities for collaboration in innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer.
