The Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco opened its doors to celebrate the San Francisco Opera Guild’s Pre-Ball for a special evening celebrating one of Italy’s most enduring contributions to world culture: opera.
Born in Italy at the end of the sixteenth century, opera brought together music, poetry, theater, and the visual arts to create a new form of artistic expression that would profoundly influence cultural life across Europe and around the world. Over the centuries, Italian composers, librettists, singers, and musicians have played a defining role in its evolution, creating a cultural heritage that remains vibrant and internationally celebrated today.
Consul General Massimo Carnelos welcomed San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock, together with members of the Board, leadership, staff, supporters, and donors, for a special gathering at the Consulate General.
The evening offered an opportunity to celebrate the longstanding connection between Italian culture and the San Francisco Opera, one of the United States’ leading opera companies, as well as the universal character of an art form capable of transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries through music, storytelling, and human emotion.
The gathering also looked ahead to the San Francisco Opera’s upcoming production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, which will open in September, bringing one of the great masterpieces of the Italian operatic repertoire to the San Francisco stage.
Consul General Carnelos expressed his appreciation to General Director Matthew Shilvock, the Board and leadership of the San Francisco Opera, its staff, supporters, and donors for their commitment to preserving and renewing the operatic tradition, and extended special thanks to Romana D’Angelo Bracco for her continued support.
Hosting the San Francisco Opera at the Consulate General provided a fitting occasion to celebrate a uniquely Italian art form that, centuries after its creation, continues to speak across cultures and generations and remains one of the most powerful expressions of Italy’s cultural heritage around the world.
