The Italian Cultural Institute and the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco hosted a poignant screening to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, honoring the memory of the Shoah, one of history’s darkest chapters.
The documentary “Il Respiro di Shlomo” tells the extraordinary story of Shlomo Venezia, a Greek-Italian Jewish survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where he was forced to serve in the Sonderkommando. Through his testimony, the film bears witness to unimaginable suffering and resilience, reminding audiences of the human cost of hatred and prejudice.
Consul General Massimo Carnelos, alongside the interim Director of the IIC Mario Zaccagnino, welcomed the audience and expressed his gratitude for the presence of Ambassador Marco Sermoneta, Consul General of Israel in San Francisco, whose participation highlighted the ongoing importance of vigilance against the worrying resurgence of antisemitism worldwide.
The Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute extend their heartfelt thanks to Ambassador Sermoneta and all attendees who joined in remembering the victims and honoring the survivors, reaffirming their shared commitment to education, remembrance, and the defense of human dignity.
