Certificate of “non-renunciation”

If the individual has decided to establish their residence in Italy, the authorities of the Italian municipality are responsible for the recognition of Italian citizenship. Once registered in the resident population registry, the foreign citizen can initiate the procedure for the recognition of citizenship jure sanguinis (the duration of which is established by law, a total of 180 days), by submitting the documentation indicated in Circular K.28.1/1991. It is not possible for the individual to be represented by a legal representative or by anyone else; the applicant must be physically present in the territory.

The request for the issuance of the Certificate of “non-renunciation” is made directly by the Italian municipality to the Consulate, exclusively via certified email (PEC). The Consulate’s response to the municipality (not to the applicant) is always provided via PEC, provided that the request has been correctly submitted.

The Consulate General cannot provide updates on processes handled by municipalities or other Consulates. Questions about these processes should be directed to the appropriate municipality or Consulate.
