The Etruscans at Berkeley: Culture, Scholarship, and Italy–U.S. Collaboration

The Consul General of Italy in San Francisco, Massimo Carnelos, attended the opening of “The Etruscans Uncovered: The Phoebe A. Hearst Collection” at University of California, Berkeley, highlighting Italy’s rich cultural heritage and its academic collaborations in the United States.

Hosted in the Bernice Layne Brown Gallery of Doe Library from March 9 to August 31, 2026, the exhibition features objects from the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology and The Bancroft Library, showcasing the Etruscans’ pioneering urban centers, religious practices, and artistic achievements.

The opening reception included remarks by Shannon Jackson, Elizabeth Brashers, Renée Dreyfus, Carlos Noreña, and Lisa Pieraccini, and tours of the exhibition were led by student-curators from Professor Pieraccini’s course, “The Etruscans: Pasts, Presents & Futures.”

“The Etruscans Uncovered” also previews the major Etruscan exhibitions scheduled later this spring at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura San Francisco, marking 2026 as a landmark year for the study and celebration of Etruscan heritage in the United States
