{"id":8063,"date":"2026-07-31T17:29:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T00:29:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/?p=8063"},"modified":"2026-07-31T17:31:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T00:31:51","slug":"electronic-identity-cards-cie-unlimited-validity-for-citizens-aged-70-and-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dal_consolato\/2026\/07\/electronic-identity-cards-cie-unlimited-validity-for-citizens-aged-70-and-over\/","title":{"rendered":"Electronic Identity Cards (CIE): Unlimited Validity for Citizens Aged 70 and Over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of 30 July 2026, the Italian Electronic Identity Card (Carta d\u2019Identit\u00e0 Elettronica \u2013 CIE) issued to Italian citizens 70 years of age or older at the time of application will have unlimited validity.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, Italian citizens aged 70 and over who are issued a CIE on or after 30 July 2026 will no longer be required to renew their identity card periodically.<\/p>\n<p>There are two exceptions:<\/p>\n<p>a) Digital identification (CIE digital authentication): the digital authentication function of the CIE, which allows access to online public services, remains valid for 10 years. After this period, citizens wishing to continue using the CIE for digital authentication will need to apply for a new card, following the revocation of the previously issued one.<\/p>\n<p>b) Use of airport automated border control gates (eGates): the electronic component enabling access through automated airport border gates also remains valid for 10 years.
