Italian citizens who chose to naturalize before 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0August 1992, automatically lost their Italian citizenship\u00a0(art. 13, comma 1, lettera c della Legge 5 febbraio 1992, n. 91).\u00a0However, they are able to re-acquire it, without losing the other citizenship, in one of the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>by submitting\u00a0<strong>a formal written statement of intent to re-acquire Italian citizenship<\/strong>\u00a0to this Consulate. The document is valid for one year and the applicant will have to move to Italy and establish their long-term residence there within 12 months of the date of issue (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzettaufficiale.it\/eli\/id\/1992\/02\/15\/092G0162\/sg\">law no. 91\/1992, art. 13, letter c<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>by\u00a0<strong>establishing their permanent residence in Italy for a minimum of one year<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzettaufficiale.it\/eli\/id\/1992\/02\/15\/092G0162\/sg\">law no.91\/1992, art. 13, letter d<\/a>). The statement of intent is not necessary in this case. The re-acquisition comes into effect the day after the one-year residency requirement has been completed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>REQUIRED DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To submit your request (<u>as outlined in option 1 above<\/u>) you must make an appointment with the Citizenship Office by emailing\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:cittadinanza.sanfrancisco@esteri.it\">cittadinanza.sanfrancisco@esteri.it<\/a>\u00a0and submit the following documents on the day of your appointment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Consolato_SanFrancisco_scheda_di_rilevazione_della_naturalizzazione.pdf\">request form<\/a>,duly filled in and signed by the applicant;<\/li>\n<li>proof of residence in this consular jurisdiction (utility bill, bank statement etc.);<\/li>\n<li>birth certificate issued by the Italian<em>\u00a0Comune<\/em>\u00a0where you were born or where your birth is registered;<\/li>\n<li>marriage certificate or divorce judgement if they occurred abroad (if they occurred in the United States, please check the\u00a0<strong>Vital Records<\/strong>\u00a0section (<a href=\"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/\">Vital Records \u2013 Consolato Generale d\u2019Italia a San Francisco<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>copy of your Italian passport (if applicable);<\/li>\n<li>certificate of US naturalization (please bring both the original and a copy);<\/li>\n<li>US passport, or other valid form of ID (please bring both the original and a copy);<\/li>\n<li>A payment receipt for EURO 250 payable to the\u00a0<em>Ministero dell\u2019Interno<\/em>. The payment should be made as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BENEFICIARIO: \u201cMINISTERO DELL\u2019 INTERNO D.L.C.I. \u2013 CITTADINANZA\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Piazzale del Viminale, 00184 ROMA (ITALIA)<br \/>\nIBAN CODE: IT54D0760103200000000809020<br \/>\nSWIFT CODE: BPPIITRRXXX<br \/>\nEUROGIRO: PIBPITRA<br \/>\nCAUSALE DEL VERSAMENTO: write the applicant\u2019s name and surname and add \u201c<em>istanza di riacquisto Cittadinanza\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as a reference on the bank transfer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You may submit your request and statement of intent only\u00a0AFTER\u00a0submitting the above documents.
