{"id":5242,"date":"2025-07-03T15:46:04","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T22:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/?page_id=5242"},"modified":"2025-07-11T16:41:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T23:41:01","slug":"loss-of-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/loss-of-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"Loss of Italian citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Italian citizen can lose his or her citizenship automatically or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conssanfrancisco.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/renunciation-of-italian-citizenship\/\">by formal renunciation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Citizenship is automatically lost whenever an Italian citizen falls under one of the three following categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the Italian citizen who voluntarily enlists in the army of a foreign State or accepts public employment or a public office in a foreign State despite being expressly prohibited from doing so by the Italian government (<strong>12, paragraph 1 of Law no. 91\/92<\/strong>);<\/li>\n<li>the Italian citizen who, during the state of war with a foreign State, has performed military service for or held a public office of or has acquired the citizenship of the enemy State (<strong> 12, paragraph 2 of Law no. 91\/92<\/strong>);<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>the Italian citizen who, having gained Italian citizenship by adoption, causes the revocation of the adoption, provided that he or she possesses or acquires another citizenship (<strong>art. 3, paragraph 3 of Law no. 91\/92<\/strong>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An Italian citizen can lose his or her citizenship automatically or\u00a0by formal renunciation.
