International Holocaust Remembrance Day: Diplomats’ Exhibit and Screening of “Shores of Light”

On International Holocaust Day, the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center presents Beyond Duty, an exhibit of 30 foreign diplomats who saved Jews and minorities during WWII, and a screening of the documentary film Shores of Light.

The screening will be preceded by a reception with the Israeli and Italian Consul Generals.

Shlomi Kofman, Israel’s Consul General to the Pacific NW, will give the background of the exhibit which pays tribute to diplomats from 21 countries who were recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.

Lorenzo Ortona, the Consul General of Italy and current EU Presidency Chair in San Francisco, will give us an introduction to the documentary film Shores of Light: Salento 1945–1947. Directed by Yael Katzir, 2015, 56 minutes, Italian with English subtitles.

Film Synopsis
Thousands of Jewish survivors landed in Southern Italy after WWII, on their way to Israel. Amazed by the welcome they received from the local population that so contrasted with the years of hatred they had endured, they found joy and healing while they awaited the ships that would run the British blockade. Hundreds of children were born during the wait. The film follows the story of three Israeli women born during this time as they discover the place and culture where their parents began to believe in life again. Weaving rare historical footage with unique current testimonials, the film captures a ray of light after great darkness.
